How I work

I never start coding before I understand what needs to happen. Sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how often that goes wrong. Every step produces something concrete — and you decide whether to continue.

Discovery

First I want to understand where you are. What do you have, what works, what doesn't? After a day or two you get an honest analysis on paper. No sales pitch, just my findings.

Specification

Then I write down what needs to be built. Not vague, but concrete: what data, what behavior, what edge cases. The kind of document you can hand to any developer and they'll know exactly what to do.

Build

With a good spec, building is predictable. I quote a price upfront, no surprises after. You know what you're getting and what it costs. Done.

Evolution

Systems are never 'done'. If you want me around while your team continues developing, that works. Architecture questions, code reviews, talking through technical choices — I stay available as long as it's useful.

No lock-in. Everything I deliver is yours. You can take it to another team tomorrow if you want.

A quick, honest look at where your system stands. I dive in, look around, and tell you what I see. No implementation plans or big redesigns — just diagnosis. Sometimes that's all you need to move forward.

Ideal for: You're not sure if you need a whole specification project, or you just want a second opinion from someone with no stake in the answer.

System Specification

The spec your team wished they'd written but never had time for. Everything a developer needs to build: behavior, data flows, edge cases, integrations. Before a single line of code gets written.

Why this works

Most projects don't fail because of bad code. They fail because nobody knew exactly what needed to be built. That's what I solve.

A spec prevents scope creep

When everything is written down and agreed upfront, nobody can say 'but I thought it would also do X' halfway through. The spec is the contract. Changes are fine, but everyone knows what they cost.

AI helps me deliver better work

I use AI to check my specifications for gaps, inconsistencies, and edge cases I might miss. It's a quality tool, not a replacement for experience. I decide, AI double-checks.

Fixed price = aligned interests

When I quote a fixed price, I carry the risk. Underestimate? My problem. That motivates me to figure out properly what needs to happen upfront. Your interest and my interest run parallel.

I'm Robert, systems architect. Twenty years of experience with backend systems, APIs, and integrations — including work for ING, Dutch Railways, and NDW. These days I work directly with companies that need senior technical expertise without agency overhead.
